A Church dedicated to health
The Church this blog is affiliated with devotes much of its time and resources to health also – but in a different way. I am a member of The Church of Christ, Scientist. As The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, holds its annual meeting today, I thought readers of this blog might want to know the connections between the healing mission of this church and mankind. The Boston church is the headquarters of the Christian Science Church. Today’s meeting is not a pilgrimage, although everyone is invited to attend. Many individual congregations throughout the world will be viewing it together on-line. Instead this meeting is an opportunity to share the effectiveness of this Church living its mission.
Mary Baker Eddy discovered Christian Science as a method of healing disease through prayer. In order that this discovery may be made better known to others, she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist. Eddy wrote in an historical sketch, “At a meeting of the Christian Scientist Association, April 12, 1879, on motion of Mrs. Eddy, it was voted – To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing.”
There is no mandate for any member of the Christian Science Church to use prayer alone for their healthcare. Each member makes his or her own decisions. But in many cases, people choose Christian Science prayer as their medicine because they have found it successful in the past.
Consider this an invitation to attend a Church of Christ, Scientist in your community, or their bookstores called a Christian Science Reading Room. Everyone is welcome to visit. There, you will find people just like you, who are dealing with issues of one sort or another – but who have found help in their lives through prayer.
The church, as a human institution, may not be perfect – but its mission is to bring health through prayer to EVERYONE who enters. Each church strives to live up to the definition of its mission found in Science and Health: “The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick.”
